The production of organic foods is governed by specific standards, generally prohibiting the use of agrochemicals, such as the synthetic pesticides. The global appetite for organically grown foodstuffs has soared in the last few decades, primarily due to prevalent consumer perceptions of the enhanced health advantages offered by these products. While organic food consumption during pregnancy is gaining traction, the consequences for the mother's and child's health are yet to be definitively proven. This review synthesizes the current research on organic food consumption during pregnancy, exploring its potential impact on maternal and child health, both immediately and over time. A detailed literature search resulted in the discovery of studies exploring the correlation between organic food consumption during pregnancy and health outcomes observed in mothers and their newborns. The literature search identified pre-eclampsia, gestational diabetes mellitus, hypospadias, cryptorchidism, and otitis media as noteworthy outcomes. While existing studies propose potential health advantages of consuming organic foods (overall or a specific type) during pregnancy, further investigation into similar outcomes within other populations is necessary. Furthermore, given that prior investigations were purely observational, and consequently susceptible to residual confounding and reverse causation, the establishment of causal relationships remains elusive. A randomized trial, assessing the effectiveness of organic dietary interventions on maternal and child health during pregnancy, is recommended as the next critical step in this research.
Supplementing with omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3PUFA) and its consequences for skeletal muscle are yet to be definitively established. The objective of this systematic review was to combine all available research findings regarding the effects of n-3PUFA supplementation on muscle mass, strength, and function in both young and older healthy individuals. Four databases—Medline, Embase, Cochrane CENTRAL, and SportDiscus—were included in the systematic search. Using Population, Intervention, Comparator, Outcomes, and Study Design as a guide, the study's eligibility criteria were pre-defined. To maintain rigor, only peer-reviewed studies were incorporated. The Cochrane RoB2 Tool and the NutriGrade approach were instrumental in determining the risk of bias and the certainty of the evidence. Pre-post score-derived effect sizes were assessed using a three-level random effects meta-analytic model. Subanalyses of muscle mass, strength, and function outcomes were conducted on the basis of adequate research findings, categorized by age of participants (less than 60 or 60 years or older), dosage of supplementation (less than 2 g/day or 2 g/day or more), and the nature of training intervention (resistance training versus no training or other interventions). From 14 separate studies, a combined total of 1443 individuals (913 women, 520 men) were included, and 52 diverse outcome measures were studied. In conclusion, our comprehensive analyses indicated that n-3PUFA supplementation, while possibly leading to a modest increase in muscle strength, did not impact muscle mass and function within the healthy young and older adult populations. We believe this review and meta-analysis is the first to systematically analyze whether n-3PUFA supplementation results in an increase in muscle strength, mass, and function in healthy adults. The outcome of anaplastic thyroid carcinoma (ATC) is grim, with a high mortality rate and a conspicuous lack of effective treatments available. The concurrent administration of PD-L1 antibody with agents that promote cell death, including deacetylase inhibitors (DACi) and multi-kinase inhibitors (MKI), may render ATC cells more susceptible to decay by means of autophagic cell death. Real-time luminescence measurements revealed a significant reduction in the viability of three different patient-derived primary ATC cells, as well as C643 cells and follicular epithelial thyroid cells, when treated with a combination of atezolizumab (PD-L1 inhibitor), panobinostat (DACi), and sorafenib (MKI). The isolated administration of these compounds triggered a significant upregulation of autophagy transcripts; however, there was nearly no detectable autophagy protein expression following single panobinostat administration, suggesting an extensive autophagy degradation. Instead, sorafenib's effects were limited to necrosis alone. Atezolizumab's elevation of caspase activity, coupled with panobinostat's induction of apoptosis and autophagy, collaboratively amplifies cell death in well-established and primary anaplastic thyroid cancer cell populations. The application of combined therapies to the treatment of such lethal and untreatable solid cancers could represent a promising future clinical direction.
